Day 1: Cairo – Fayoum – Whale Valley
From Cairo we drive by jeep south towards Fayoum, the largest
oasis in the Western Desert. We stop at Lake Qaroun for a tour by
felucca (half an hour) and then visit Kaser Qaroun. After
arriving at Wadi Rayan, we
visit the spring and waterfall, eat lunch and then continue to
the desert. We reach Wadi Al Hitan (otherwise known as the
Valley of Whales), a surreal region where huge boulders seem to
be capped with an imaginary icing of thick caramelised syrup,
which appears to ooze down their sides. Within this
extraordinary landscape the fossil remains of Zeuglodon – whales that existed in the Fayoum over 40 million
years ago- have been found. We spend the night camping out under
a canopy of stars.
Day 2: Fayoum – Minya
After traveling from Fayoum to Minya, we visit the
famous rock tombs of Beni Hassan. Afterwards, we drive to Tell el Amarna, the new capital of Echnaton,
take a trip to Tuna el-Gebel, and
visit the tomb of Petosiris Temple and the ruins of Hermopolis.
We spend the night in a hotel in Minya.
Day 3: Minya-Cairo
After breakfast, we return to Cairo. End of services.
